I find inspiration in many places and have traveled to Borrego Springs and Wonder Valley, CA; Provincetown, MA; Counties Roscommon and Leitrim, Ireland; Dehli and Jaipur, India.
Theses places have influenced my creative style and process. I create art because art is a compulsion that, for me, started with music. Music pushed me into painting as a way of capturing my relationship with the world and the people in it. When I started, I was finding ways of painting what I saw. As my work has evolved, it has become a way to capture how I feel and think about the world. I specialize works created using a combination of oil paint, acrylic paint, alcohol inks, marker pens, pencils, charcoal and colored pencils. I focus on creating my work from inside. I let my non-dominant hand draw and create a structure which determines the basis for what emerges. The final works are a combination of representation and abstraction. I also enjoy working with printmaking, especially monotypes.
My art style is a cross between cartoon, caricature work and layered abstraction. I am motivated by my close personal connections, music and colors as they are seen in nature. I have been creating art for over 45 years. My favorite artist is Cy Twombly whose work I still find to be radical! I connect with the art community by working as a curator at a non-profit space. I install exhibits at least 5 times a year that focus on the work of new or underrepresented artists. My work has been shown at in a special exhibit at the Lourve, Paris; World Trade Center, New York; Drawing Rooms, Jersey City; Monmouth Museum, Lindcroft; and the Watchung Arts Center, Watchung among others.
I intend for others to experience the idea of what it means to be fully human, to recognize how identity is a construct that we make every day, and that each of us is in a constant state of evolving, in spite of our habits and limitations.
I’m originally from Newark, New Jersey. Today I do most of my creative artwork from Plainfield, New Jersey.
